A Day Trip to Anza-Borrego: Desert Views, Metal Sculptures, and the Best Mexican Food

Summary

I drove from San Diego to Anza-Borrego for a day trip. On the way, I stopped at a lookout point high in the mountains, before I even reached the desert. Once I got to Borrego Springs, I rode my e-bike through the giant metal sculptures at Galleta Meadows. Then, right before heading home, I found the best Mexican food I’ve had in California.

The Montezuma Valley Road Lookout

I was driving from San Diego to Anza-Borrego and stopped along the way, on a road S22. There’s a lookout point up in the mountains, about 2,300 feet high. From there you can see the whole desert valley below, and the road winding down into it.

Two signs stood next to the view (See the image below). One talked about how big the desert is. The other was about bighorn sheep, which live on the rocky hills nearby. I hadn’t even made it to Anza-Borrego yet, and it already felt like a different world. A different beautiful world!

Galleta Meadows Estate (AKA the Galleta Meadows sculptures)

Here is the story behind Galleta Meadows Sculptures: The land is called Galleta Meadows Estate because it’s privately owned by Dennis Avery (An Anza-Borrego philanthropist), who passed away in 2012, had all these metal sculptures (Ricardo Breceda’s work, inspired by the book “Fossil Treasures of Anza-Borrego Desert”) put up and left the land open for anyone to walk, bike, or ride through to see them. He brought “art” to Borrego Springs.

I brought my e-bike and pink helmet with me so that I could bike through the sculptures and I did! I’m so glad I brought my e-bike with me.

The sculptures are breathtaking. Beautiful! If you re the type of a person who doesn’t really like walking, get an e-bike. I do like walking but I wanted to bike around the desert to feel that experience.

The Best Mexican Dish I've Ever Eaten in California

On my way back home, before getting out of Borrego Springs, I had to stop by a splace to eat. I found a mexican restaurant, then ordered this dish. Surprisingly, it was so delicious! No I’m serious, it was so yum!!! If you every go to Borrego Springs, try this restaurant: Pablito’s Mexican Bar & Grill. I think this plate was called Pescado A La Diabla.
