Whether you wear makeup every day or none at all, your skin is quietly making oil and sebum around the clock, and that buildup has to go somewhere. The good news is that once you know your skin type, cleansing gets a lot simpler — how often you wash, the technique you use, and the product you reach for all start to fall into place. Here’s everything you need to build a cleansing routine that actually works for you, whether your skin runs dry, oily, combination, or sensitive.

Cleansing Isn't Optional, Even Without Makeup
It’s easy to assume cleansing only matters if you wear makeup or are under oxidative stress (e.g., from pollution), but that’s not how skin works. Sebum (1 to 2 teaspoons a day) and oil are produced continuously, and they combine with sweat, dead skin cells, and everyday grime whether or not anything else touches your face. Left alone, that combination can lead to clogged pores and breakouts over time, no matter your skin type. A consistent cleanse is one of the lowest-effort habits in a routine, though it’s also easy to get wrong by cleansing too much or too little.
How Often Your Skin Actually Needs Washing

For most people, a single daily cleanse with a cleanser is enough, typically at night to clear away what accumulated during the day. Come morning, rinsing with water alone is usually plenty — a second full cleanse isn’t necessary unless your skin runs oily. If you have acne-prone skin, it’s best to cleanse 2-3 times a day.
Climate plays a role too: drier climates mean your skin may not need a full wash-down every night, since cleansing too frequently can strip away natural oils and leave skin feeling tight. The better approach is to read how your skin responds rather than follow a rigid schedule.
Getting the Technique Right
How you cleanse counts as much as what you cleanse with.
- Stick to lukewarm water rather than hot, since heat can dry out and aggravate skin.
- Roughly half a minute to a full minute is enough time to work the product in and rinse it away completely.
Small Habits That Boost Your Routine
A couple of overlooked habits can make your cleansing routine noticeably more effective.
- Swap in a clean baby washcloth each night rather than reusing a damp one — a used cloth can transfer bacteria and oil straight back onto your skin, so keeping about seven on hand, one per night, makes this an easy habit to maintain.
- Pillowcases matter too, since they collect oil, sweat, and product residue; refreshing yours about every 2 nights keeps your skin cleaner between washes.
Neither habit takes much effort, but together they help your cleanser go further.
Picking a Cleanser Based on Your Skin Type
Your ideal cleanser comes down to your skin type.
- Dry skin does best with a cream-based formula built around moisturizing ingredients such as ceramides, hyaluronic acid, shea or cocoa butter, mineral oil, or petrolatum, so it cleans without pulling moisture away.
- Oily typically respond better to a gel or foaming cleanser, since these contain more surfactants — think sulfates or glucosides — paired with ingredients like niacinamide or salicylic acid for a deeper clean; combination skin in particular benefits from formulas built to balance both oilier and drier areas at once.
- Combination skin. Seek products specifically formulated for combination skin that include ingredients beneficial for both dry and oily skin types. They have just enough surfactant and cleansing agent and just enough emollient.
- Sensitive skin should steer clear of sulfate-based cleansers altogether and lean toward gentler, coconut-derived formulas that clean without triggering irritation or redness.
