A Beginner’s Meditation Routine: Where I’d Start If I Were Starting Over

If I could start my meditation practice over, this is exactly how I'd do it — starting with intention, then breath, then slowly building up the time. Here's the beginner routine I wish I'd had from day one.

Summary

If I were starting my meditation practice over, this is exactly how I’d do it. It starts with something most people skip: an actual intention, not just sitting down because it seems like a good idea. From there, it’s about getting comfortable with your breath first, whether that means leaning on a mantra for a few minutes or building on a yoga practice you already have. Here’s the beginner routine I’d follow, from your first 5-minute session all the way up to 30 minutes and beyond.

Start With an Intention (Not Just to Say You Meditate)

Before anything else, you need to be curious about meditation — genuinely curious, not just doing it because it’s trendy. From there, set an intention. Maybe it’s to get better control of your mind, maybe it’s to connect to something bigger than yourself, or maybe you’re just chasing that deep meditative state. Whatever it is, name it before you start. Without an intention, you’re not really meditating — you’re just going through the motions so you can tell a friend you meditate. I’d call that unconscious meditation.

Why Your Breath Comes First

Once you’ve set your intention, start with your breath. The goal isn’t to force or control it — it’s to notice it. You’ll know you’ve found the sweet spot when your breathing feels right without you pushing it in any direction. That’s the foundation you need before you can go any deeper into a meditative state later on.

Start Small: Mantra and Breath-Assisted Sessions (5-15 Minutes)

If you’re still unsure about your breathing, don’t worry — start with a mantra and breath-assisted meditation, somewhere in the 5 to 15 minute range. Having a mantra to anchor to takes some of the pressure off while you’re still figuring out your breath. If you really want to get better at meditation (whether you want your mind to listen to you, not to be controlled by it or get closer to a higher power), set a time every day when you get up.

Build Up From There: 20-30 Minutes and Beyond

From there, you can work your way up to a 20 or 30 minute session. Once you’re comfortable at that length, start experimenting — try swapping your mantra for nature sounds, or drop the sound altogether and sit with nothing at all. See what actually works for you.
